Equating Fear with Opportunity

I think I may have committed a crime, but I have gained inspiration for this blog from said crime.  Last week I was at the doctor’s office and picked up the latest issue of Vogue while I was waiting.  One of my favorite actresses was on the cover, Claire Danes, to talk about her role in Homeland.  Unfortunately, I didn’t have enough time to read the article so I took it with me.

I read the article over the weekend and one thing stuck out for me.  When Claire read the script for Homeland she said it was so good that she was scared of it which meant that she had to do it.  The writer goes on to say, “I wondered, listening to her, how many people would equate fear with opportunity.”  BINGO!

I have written before about challenging my fears and this just makes it more relevant!  How often do we go out of our comfort zone, do something that scares us and what was the outcome?

For Claire, she took this amazing part as a female leader in the CIA, influenced our culture to a point that more applications to the CIA are taking place, and won two Golden Globes, an Emmy and a SAG award.

For me, I decided to make a life change, created a blog, started practicing yoga, began running and so far have completed two 5Ks.  The outcome hasn’t been easy.  There is pain, tears and fear but I have gained so much more.  I hope I have influenced people to make a positive change in their life; I have pushed myself to learn how much I can handle; I have gained confidence and feel more alive.

It’s not just about working out and eating right.  There are so many things that we don’t do because of fear.  For example, starting your own business, leaving a bad relationship, starting a new job, etc.

What fears are holding you back from your life?

My New Habit

I’m definitely the girl on the left!

The weekend is here and it appears that I’m starting a new habit:  5K’s and a date!

Last weekend I completed my first 5K (as a runner) and on Monday I must have been high because I signed up for this weekend’s Asbury Park 5K.  Not sure what I was thinking but it’s not like I can’t do it, right!?!

I also met a guy and set a date for Saturday night.  I have a good feeling about this one 🙂  He is into Crossfit and cycling which is awesome so I know he’s not sedentary.  But other than that he seems really nice and can hold a conversation without mentioning sex.  (Take a clue Botchagaloop!)

I’ll be sure to update you all on the flipside!

What’s Your Motivation Take 2

shark week

I began my blog and change back in March and like to look back on how far I have come.  Not only have I evolved physically but the mental part is the biggest change.

I wrote What’s Your Motivation in the first couple weeks of working out.  I’ll admit that the blog is bad but I think about motivation often because it takes motivation everyday to keep going.

In the beggining I compared myself to everyone.  Everyone I worked out with I compared myself to.  God, she’s in her 50’s and way better than me!  Why can’t I do push ups like everyone else?!

My friend Nikki posted this on her Facebook today:  The biggest mistake people make in life is worrying what everyone else thinks.  She is so right!!  I shouldn’t be comparing myself to anyone but using it as motivation to do better!

The best motivator is you, yourself!  I feel motivated to get up and see the sunrise but the most important thing is that I feel good throughout the day.  My energy is way up, I am more focused and at the end of the day I feel accomplished.

What motivates you to keep going everyday?

Botchagaloop: Take 2

I love when people read my blog and talk about it.  Your comments are always welcome and pretty entertaining so keep them coming!

Having said that, I heard from an old friend last night about my “Dating Re-cap” blog.  She too is doing the online dating routine but nothing amazing has come out of it except for some interesting stories much like mine.  In fact, our stories were so similar we learned we both had a date with BOTCHAGALOOP!

Oh dear baby Jesus can this get any better?!

I did leave a tidbit of information out of my previous blog because it really wasn’t something I wanted to share since my Mom might read my blog.  Oh well, here goes.  While taking our oh-so-romantic stroll on the beach Botchagaloop asked me if I’ve ever had sex on the beach.  It’s safe to say he wasn’t referring to the cocktail.

This guy is a real charmer!

I shared this with my friend and she immediately knew Botchagaloop because she went on a date with him too!  He said the same exact thing to her!  Get some new material buddy!  Is your life that boring that you don’t have things to talk about other than sex on a first date!?  Maybe you should go be by yourself (if you know what I mean).

Have you ever been on a date with someone who just doesn’t have anything special to bring to the table?

Date Re-Cap

beach walk

This past Saturday I had a scheduled date with “Botchagaloop” (names have been changed to protect the innocent Italian dude).  He lives up north so I assumed we could meet half way in Long Branch at Avenue or McLoone’s.  Unfortunately he suggested Parker House or Squan Tavern.  Not ideal but he was going for casual drinks.  I agreed to Parker House when an image of screaming children eating pizza at Squan Tavern entered my mind.

I had Botchagaloop meet me on the corner outside of the Parker House because I’m not a fan of walking into a bar alone plus this would give me a chance to speed past in case he didn’t look like his pics.  Alas, I was there first and waited for him for a couple minutes.

He wasn’t bad looking at all but he was slightly shorter.  Not a deal breaker but I do prefer to feel smaller.  The Parker House did turn out to be a bad idea because we were herded like cattle into the roped area of the front bar and the noise level didn’t help either.  But we stuck it out while laughing at the older couples trying to get their load on at the bar.

Afterward he suggested a walk on the beach which was great because it was a beautiful night.  I found out that he likes the Real Housewives of NJ almost as much as I do and he is Team Jacqueline.  Phew…glad we got that out of the way!

Overall the date went smoothly but Botchagaloop did say something that I’m not quite sure how to take.  He said, “I bet you get hit on by a lot of black guys.”  I said, “why?”  He replied, “Because you’re curvy.”  Hmmmm.  In the moment I laughed it off but afterward I got hit by the “what the f@*& truck.”

I’m still not sure how to take it.  Help me out here…

I Did It!

About 18 months ago I signed up for a 5K in Sea Bright.  I went about 1/4 of a mile and turned around.  I had no desire or motivation to complete it and felt like a big loser.

This morning I am proud to say that I completed the Sea Girt 5K in about 42 minutes with a 12:59 pace.  I can remember doing the dreaded yearly mile in high school and being timed somewhere in the 12 minute mark.  That was 17 years ago.

I’m not gonna lie; it was hard.  The first mile wasn’t too bad since I was chatting with my cousin Tracy but after that it was a challenge to dig deep and keep going.  Right before mile 2 I had hit a good stride.  Nothing hurt and I was controlling my breathing but made a bad decision to stop at the water pass and it totally threw me off.

Towards the end I just told myself to keep going to finish strong.  The last thing I wanted to do was walk across the finish line.  And I ran through the end.

Thanks to everyone for your encouragement and support.  Two weeks til the Bradley Beach 5K!

We did it!  I was thanking Baby Jesus for being done!
We got to see Cooper crush it in the kid’s race.
He’s the pro doing the runners stretch!
