What Are You Waiting For?

what are you waiting for

The other day I was sitting on the beach with my friend explaining how hard the dating scene is.  I had been on a couple dates and had a couple coming up.  Unfortunately, the one had cancelled our 2nd date the day before due to work schedule which is totally understandable.

Since I’m an open book I have to admit I took a blow to the ego.  Did he not want to see me again and this was an excuse or maybe he really was just busy with work?!  This is how my brain functions: I question things and think things to death until I exhaust myself and build anxiety that’s unnecessary.  A lot of people think I’m calm and collected, which I generally am, but I’m a basket case on the inside.

Going back to the relaxing beach scene….my friend gave me really good advice:  Stop over thinking and do something for yourself.  That can mean different things to different people but to me it means focus on me being happy and healthy.

The gears start churning in my head trying to think of what I can do to change things for me and I asked myself, what have I done in the past that makes me feel good, not only mentally but physically?

If you haven’t been following my blog, roughly two years ago I started at Ultimate Fit Zone by joining their boot camp classes.  I did it for about three months and then went into running. (I quit way too early!) It was the only workout that worked for me.  Encouraging trainers and peers and I did things I never imaged I could do with my body.  So, the bitch is back…

I figure we only live one life so live it happy!  In closing, I ask you…what are you waiting for to do what makes YOU happy?

6 Months and 10 Pounds Later…

goal

It’s time to get back into the swing of things with eating healthy and being good to my body through activity. It has been a long cold winter that’s been a big setback especially since I am signed up for the Spring Lake 5 miler in 32 days. Eeek!

No worries though because a goal without a plan is just a wish and I have a plan! My plan is to keep those amazing Boston Marathoners from yesterday in my mind. There were survivors of the attacks that crossed the finish line, others in their 60’s – 80’s, and who can leave out “Rudy” Sean Astin?

How can I possibly say I can’t do a 5 miler when these amazing, inspiring and strong-minded individuals who have more reason than me to not finish, have completed a marathon?!

My other plan is to be prepared! This morning I put out my clothes for later today despite my dog’s unhappiness that he’ll lose me for an hour.

Wish me luck!

Spring Lake 5

Spring Lake 5

It’s Sunday morning and a few minutes past 5am.  I remember that Spring Lake 5 registration had just started so I jump on my computer to sign up.  How exciting would it be to have a low bib number?  Isn’t that all runner’s goal when registering or maybe it’s just me!

Registration was a breeze but yet I’m still awake.  I have to admit, it kind of feels like Christmas morning.  The memories of last year’s race floods my mind.  The experience was incredible: locals cheering us on at each step; banners waving in the crowds; running down streets that bring back childhood memories.  These thoughts make me feel happy!

What seems to be a little race registration task is helping me get my running motivation back.  Thank God!  The last few months I haven’t wanted to do anything which is out of the norm for me. People tell me it’s the weather but I think I’ve been in a funk!

I have a plan brewing of what I’m going to do to change this funk so stay tuned!  Now I’m off to plan on Spring Lake 5 outfit!!

Spasiba 2014!

In honor of #tbt I took a look back on 2014 and laughed and smiled at all the things I have done.  I have met new friends, strengthened others and completed some goals!  Here are just some of my main squeezes…

friends

2014 started out pretty amazing as I celebrated my 35th birthday with important friends and family.  For those of you who closed down the bar with us, the party didn’t stop there (Neptune ballet)…  Who knew I would meet a new friend there and would have many memories throughout the year (ahem, Bar A in AC, Irish car bombs, etc etc)

The Spring brought on awesome outings with new said friends as well as a great trips with my Mom.  The first was up to the city to visit my bro on St. Patrick’s Day.  My first time at the parade and at The Tonight Show.  If you have an opportunity to do these things – do it!  You won’t regret it!

We also traveled to Miami to visit my family.  I had an awesome visit with my cousin who gave me a tour of the upper Keys via boat bar hopping – the best method!

Memorial Day Weekend was also a start to a big goal of mine; to complete the Jersey Shore Golden Grand Prix (running five specific races over the summer).  During this time I completed two 5-milers and three 5Ks.  My favorite was the Spring Lake 5.  The crowd was awesome and the weather was perfect.

As the summer came to a close my family and I were off to the beautiful state of Colorado to celebrate my cousin’s wedding at 11k+ feet on Keystone Mountain.  It was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen and to celebrate two people who make each other very happy was the icing on the cake.  The Rocky Mountains were crazy cool – GO!

The cold weather started to close in which meant it was time to get out of Jersey.  My travel buddy and I took an amazing trip to Punta Cana where we had the time of our lives.  We met great new friends from Latvia, Newark and Pittsburgh!  I wonder what we’ll do next year!

Lastly, and most importantly, we celebrated my Grandmother’s 94th birthday.  How lucky are we that my Grandmother is not only still with us to celebrate the holidays but she’s sharp, funny and is still able to live on her own.  We had a great day with all the grandkids to celebrate how much we love her!  Nine grandkids and four greats – amazing!

Looking back on all of these amazing memories makes me wonder if 2015 will top it.  Who knows what goals I will create but as long as I have these good people around me I say YES!  Wishing you all the best in 2015 – hope to see you out there! Nostrovia!

#tbt: Chalupas and Chicken & Waffles

liz tbt

Another #tbt is upon us and what better way to celebrate than show updates on my progress.  The pic of the left was taken about a year and a half ago getting friendly with a Japanese status at a sushi restaurant and to the right is this morning.

Even though the physicial change is awesome the most important thing to me is how I feel.  When I started my little journey I was so tired of feeling crappy and the contstant guilt in my head about what I ate or saying that I’ll change tomorrow just wasn’t working.  I finally did something about it and I couldn’t be happier.

I have learned so much about food and what is good for me to get through my day and what isn’t.  By no means am I perfect because I’ve recently eaten a Chalupa and enjoyed my first chicken & waffles (and yes I was totally sober), but moderation is key as is movement!

No matter what you do just keep moving.  I’ve tried so many cool things in the last 18 months to find out what works for me and that’s part of discovering who you are.  I’ve tried boot camp, TRX, spin, yoga, swimming, paddle boarding and running.  They were all awesome but what will keep you interest to keep going?  That’s what will work for you.

If you’re looking for a gym buddy or someone to bounce something off of, let me know because I’m happy to help!  And, thanks for being part of my journey!

How Do I Begin Again?

competition

I am so excited about this year’s Biggest Loser because it features former athletes who had given up on their healthy regiments and fighting back to get in shape again.  I recently find myself in the same position.  I had started a weight loss journey and have admittedly gotten off track.

I am not back where I started but I had worked so hard that I needed a reminder that it doesn’t just stop and I have to keep going!  I ask myself, what is holding you back from moving forward?  It’s mostly fear!  It’s funny because I have written about fear being a wall blocking us from what we want and here I am, in fear.

I have a big fear of failing.  What if I fail at getting back on track?  What if I start up boot camp again and everyone I had worked out with is so far ahead of me now?  I am a naturally competitive person but need to remind myself that my only competition is me!

So, here I am reminding myself and you not to be afraid and the only person who can make a change is you.  Who wants to get back on track with me?  I’ll be your workout buddy near or far.  Let’s do this!

Does your diet get a vacation too?

Liz Miami

Summer is here and everyone is planning their vacations to get away from the everyday, myself included!  We work so hard in our jobs, keeping our families afloat and trying to do healthy things for ourselves that we deserve a break!  Eating healthy and exercising is tough work so I wanted to share some tips on how to enjoy yourself while away but not go off the rails.

Water.  Agua.  Eau.

The most important thing you can do for yourself is hydrate!  Flying to your destination sucks the water from our bodies as does laying in the sun therefor keep water with you at all times.  I recently bought myself a vacuum sealed water bottle that stays cold for 12 hours.  Great to travel with and keeping near your lounge chair.

When In Rome…

Taking in the sites and culture of your destination is a great way to get some exercise.  There can be a lot of walking involved so wear comfortable shoes.  It’s also important to stop for some food and eat as the locals do.  There’s no reason why you can’t indulge while on vacation but do so in moderation.  Remember how far you’ve come and it’s not worth taking a step back.

Snacks Aren’t Just for Kids

Taxiing your kids around and errands can be exhausted and it’s probably tempting to stop at a fast food place to curb your cravings.  Don’t do it!  Carrying snacks with you is something we should do everyday.  There are always snacks available in the airport, your hotel or convenience stores just read the labels and stay away from cakes, cookies and candy.

You deserve a vacation away from your daily schedule but it’s not an invitation to go buckwild with your diet.  Remind yourself of how far you’ve come and don’t give up.  Drink your water, get some exercise, enjoy the local food in moderation, pack your snacks and you’re set for success!
